Simtel (BVB: SMTL), an engineering and technology group listed on the Main Market of the Bucharest Stock Exchange and one of the leading players in the renewable energy sector in Romania, announces the completion of the battery energy storage project carried out for Energy Capital Group, owned by MOGAN Bucharest SRL, part of the GÜRİŞ Group from Turkey. With an installed capacity of 100 MW and 200 MWh, the project implemented in the village of Iaz, Obreja commune, Caraș-Severin County, represents the largest independent utility-scale battery energy storage (BESS) project in Banat and one of the most important energy storage projects carried out to date in Romania. The 200 MWh capacity represents a significant contribution to the national target for energy storage systems, as set out in the National Integrated Energy and Climate Plan (NECP), and a concrete step toward making the Romanian energy system more flexible, at a time when integrating ever-larger volumes of variable renewable energy is becoming a strategic priority at European level.
The project included the supply of the battery energy storage system, as well as the design, construction, installation, commissioning, completion and testing of the facility. The system has a storage capacity of approximately 200 MWh and an installed power of 100 MW and includes 44 lithium-ion battery containers, 528 high-power inverters, a 110 kV substation, 11 transformer stations and an energy management system (EMS).
“We see this project as the beginning of a regional development platform in the field of energy storage and flexibility services. We led the energy transition in Turkey 20 years ago with our engineering capabilities. Romania has major potential in this sector, and we intend to become a relevant player in this transformation ,” stated Kaan Yamantürk, CEO Energy Capital Group.
“The completion of the Iaz project marks an important moment for Simtel and confirms the group’s positioning in the area of utility-scale energy storage projects, a segment that will define the coming years of the energy market in Romania and the region. Implementing a project of this size within eight months confirms the maturity of the Simtel Team in delivering complex EPC projects and has allowed us to consolidate in-house technical competencies that are becoming a competitive advantage for our upcoming storage projects. The business line dedicated to energy storage is, for Simtel, one of our strategic development directions, and the experience gained through this project gives us a solid foundation for expanding our portfolio of similar projects, both in Romania and in other markets in the region where the group is already present. We would like to thank our partners at Energy Capital Group, MOGAN Bucharest, and Lara Business Energy for their excellent collaboration and support throughout the implementation of this landmark project for the local energy market ”, stated Mihai Tudor, CEO of Simtel Group.
The implementation of the Iaz project involved significant technical challenges from the very beginning. The land on which the facility was built was marshy, and preparing it for heavy industrial loads required complex civil engineering works for stabilization and consolidation. At the same time, the accelerated delivery and installation processes, together with rigorous site management, made it possible to complete the entire project within just eight months — a short timeframe for a BESS project of this scale.
The project carried out by Energy Capital Group benefits from the support of the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (NRRP), through the pillar dedicated to the green transition. The company has obtained funding worth more than 50 million lei for the implementation of this battery energy storage capacity.
Simtel launched its business line dedicated to energy storage systems in 2024, in response to the growing need for efficient management of energy consumption and generation. These solutions enable active participation in the energy balancing market, through the optimal calibration of voltage and frequency, while also contributing to greater grid stability and the efficient integration of renewable energy sources into the national energy system.
